Crypto Investment

If you’re serious about cryptocurrency investing, I’ve got some news for you:

In 2025, your native country’s passport may not be enough anymore.

As someone who’s helped a lot of crypto investors and Bitcoiners build and protect their wealth and digital assets through investment migration, I can tell you that having a second passport is becoming a necessity for anyone serious about a truly diversified crypto investment strategy.

Here’s why and how you can implement your own citizenship plan to safeguard your and your family’s future:

The Changing Landscape of Crypto

The world of cryptocurrency investing is shifting quickly. As an investor yourself, you know this better than most.

For a decade and a half, traditional financial institutions dismissed Bitcoin as a scam. They fought tooth and nail to help the government regulate virtual currency and penalize crypto trading as much as possible.

Now, the tone has shifted. Cryptocurrency has gone mainstream, as evidenced by your grandmother asking how many Bitcoins she should buy with her retirement pension. Those same tradfi institutions, like Fidelity Investments, are now scrambling to launch their own crypto exchanges and Bitcoin ETFs.

But one stakeholder has only tightened their grip on cryptocurrency and blockchain technology: Government regulators. So while retail and institutional investors alike adopt cryptocurrency investment as a valid and acceptable piece of their financial portfolio, the United States Securities Investor Protection Corporation and Securities and Exchange Commission still won’t touch most crypto assets.

Here’s what I’m seeing on the ground: From the United States to the United Kingdom, governments across the world are trying to force cryptocurrency into their old-world framework of traditional investments. They want to regulate blockchain technology and digital assets like they do mutual funds or exchange traded funds.

But here’s the reality – Bitcoin wasn’t created to fit into their system. In reality, it was built to subvert the outdated financial and monetary system.

In the last two years, we’ve seen small nations with little influence on the global stage leap to a seat at the table just by investing directly in digital currency via their sovereign fund or strategic reserve, accept Bitcoin as legal tender, or provide a clear regulatory framework for those who operate, earn, work, save, and invest in cryptocurrency.

Some central banks and the American Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), which is designed to protect American retail investors and consumers, are increasingly hostile toward everything related to virtual currency – Bitcoin mining, crypto investment strategies, cryptocurrency payments, etc. I’ve seen countless investors lose access to their bank accounts simply for trying to transfer money from crypto exchanges.

But with promising action by some courageous political leaders around the world, we’re starting to see major pressure exerted on governments from the bottom-up (instead of top-down).

Why Your Home Country Passport May Not Be Enough

Let me be direct: if you’re serious about buying cryptocurrency (even mining cryptocurrency) and wealth management, relying solely on your home country passport is like playing Russian roulette with your financial assets.

Here’s why:

Banking Restrictions

Despite some movement in the opposite direction and in our favor, traditional currency systems are actively fighting against cryptocurrency. Many banks now restrict or outright block Bitcoin transactions or more disastrously, freeze accounts associated with digital assets.

I’ve seen clients lose their entire investment portfolio because their bank decided to freeze and hold their account funds.

Your bank’s administrator or some politician in an ivory tower far away could wake up one morning and decide to act against cryptocurrency investors. If you have all your eggs in one basket, you have nowhere to run or hide.

With a single passport, you’re at the behest of that jurisdiction’s regulators. With a passport portfolio, you have the option to avoid this fate and diversify your investments across several jurisdictions and their regulatory frameworks.

Tax Nightmares

Most high-tax countries treat cryptocurrency holdings like any other financial assets, which can subject them to substantial capital gains taxes. Therefore, they demand detailed reporting on cryptocurrency holdings while offering none of the same regulatory protections applicable to traditional investments.

Worst of both worlds.

With more citizenships to your name, you can bank in different countries and territories, ideally in those favourable to digital assets and respectful of the underlying technology.

Limited Access

Many online brokers and financial apps are geographically restricted. Why? They don’t want to deal with regulators from some countries. For example, many international banks restrict American citizens from opening international bank accounts in other jurisdictions because they do not want the United States government’s heavy-handed reporting requirements.

In other words, your native country’s passport might be blocking you from the ability to buy Bitcoin or store cryptocurrency in the most tax-favourable jurisdictions and best crypto exchanges.

Benefits of a Second Passport for Crypto Investors

So, this is where a second passport comes in. In short, dual citizenship can be a powerful tool for cryptocurrency investing. Here’s more about what a passport portfolio can do for you:

Tax Optimization

Having the right second passport can legally reduce or eliminate your tax burden on crypto transactions. We’re talking about going from paying 37% or more to potentially 0% on your crypto gains.

How?

If you currently are a tax resident in a crypto-antagonist jurisdiction (in other words, unfriendly to crypto trading and capital gains), your pocket will bear the cost. Each year you file taxes in that country, you lose more and more of your net worth.

On the other hand, if you become a tax resident and citizen of a country that respects the cryptocurrency industry and wants to see you become more financially successful, you may benefit greatly each year you file and pay taxes.

For example, crypto capital gains taxes in Denmark can reach up to almost 45%. Plus, some regulators have proposed unrealized capital gains tax (i.e. taxing your virtual currency when you invest in crypto, hold your digital assets, and when you sell them). If you relocate to a more tax-friendly jurisdiction and become a tax resident there, you can, in some cases, reduce those taxes to zero.

Banking Freedom and Investment Flexibility

As a citizen, you have the right to bank and invest in your native country. Of course, if you obtain citizenship in another country, you open a lot of banking and investment options for yourself and your family.

You already know asset diversification is a smart way to invest and manage risk. But what most investors overlook is geographic diversification.

A second passport allows you to invest in emerging markets, new investment opportunities, more currencies (including virtual currency and cryptocurrency funds), and other financial assets available all around the world – not just in your native country. This means you can manage risk better and protect your digital assets from overzealous regulators.

Of course, this is not investment advice. These are just generally understood financial principles.

Top Jurisdictions for Crypto Investors

We’ve covered this in a thorough article about the top crypto-friendly countries in the world and how to get residency and/or citizenship there. But we’ll cover a smaller version below.

Based on my extensive experience helping investors protect their wealth, here are the top jurisdictions for crypto investors:

UAE/Dubai

  • 0% capital gains tax on investments in cryptocurrency
  • Global hub for blockchain companies
  • Investors can purchase real estate, cars, and luxury goods with cryptocurrency
  • Banks increasingly accept Bitcoin and allow account holders to invest in cryptocurrencies
  • Strong wealth management infrastructure

The UAE has positioned itself wisely as the future of cryptocurrency investing. Most crypto exchanges have some presence in Dubai because of their low corporate taxes and clear regulatory framework for crypto investing (i.e. low transaction fees, plenty of options for buying cryptocurrency, zero taxes on Bitcoin gains, fiat currencies welcome as well).

Apart from Lincoln Global Partners being headquartered in Dubai, we’ve also helped numerous clients establish residency here, where individuals can buy crypto, purchase real estate with cryptocurrency, and cash out digital currency tax-free.

El Salvador

  • First country to accept Bitcoin as legal tender
  • No cryptocurrency capital gains tax
  • Large Bitcoin position in strategic reserve
  • Citizenship available through cryptocurrency investment
  • Increasingly safe, stable, and developed

While El Salvador may not be for everyone, it’s making bold moves in the cryptocurrency market and on the international stage.

Their citizenship by investment program, which accepts USDT and Bitcoin cryptocurrency payments, is particularly interesting for investors looking to secure a second passport quickly. Processing time is just a few months.

El Salvador also offers a one-year fast-track to citizenship for preferred nationalities” – in this case, Latin Americans from another country in the Americas.

Switzerland

  • Sophisticated banking system with understanding of digital assets
  • Several banks that allow account holders to invest in cryptocurrencies
  • Strong asset protection and banking privacy laws
  • Clear regulatory framework to avoid cryptocurrency scams and cryptocurrency fraud
  • Wealth preservation track record

While Swiss residency isn’t easy to obtain, having an account in a Swiss bank through the right structure can be invaluable for crypto investors looking to protect their financial resources. Citizenship in the country is not necessary.

Portugal

  • Zero capital gains tax on crypto holdings of more than a year
  • Growing crypto company hub
  • Ability to invest in cryptocurrencies and Bitcoin via exchange-traded funds (ETFs)

Through Portugal’s golden visa program which requires €500,000 of investment, applicants can invest in cryptocurrencies and Bitcoin indirectly, an investment fund feature rare in the investment migration industry.

Then, after five years of holding the investment and visa, investors can qualify for citizenship in the European Union, a powerful travel document that provides residency, banking, investment, and labor privileges across the whole region.

Investment Migration Strategies for Crypto Investors

When it comes to securing a second passport as a crypto investor, here are your main options:

Citizenship by Investment

The fastest route to a second citizenship is typically through citizenship by investment programs. Countries like El Salvador and Antigua & Barbuda are directly accepting cryptocurrency for their programs, while others will work with you to verify transactions and source of funds through approved channels.

Citizenship by Descent

Typically the second fastest and most affordable method (up to 90% less than citizenship by investment) to obtain dual citizenship is by descent.

If you have a European parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent, you may qualify for citizenship in the country where your ancestors hold or held citizenship. After proving their citizenship with various records and your family ties to them, you can obtain citizenship in a processing period of roughly 3 months to 3 years.

Residency by Investment

For those looking to establish a physical presence and become a tax resident in a crypto-friendly country, residency by investment programs in places like Dubai and Singapore offer a compromise. Although obtaining citizenship in these countries is rare, you can get residency by investing directly in a local company or real estate in the country. This residency permit allows you to live in the country for as long as you maintain the visa.

Banking Considerations

Before making any moves, you need to understand how different jurisdictions treat cryptocurrency transactions. Some of the most crypto-friendly countries still have traditional banks that are hesitant to process cryptocurrency transactions.

4 Common Mistakes to Avoid

In the process of investing internationally, I’ve seen crypto investors make these costly mistakes:

1. Poor Timing

Do not wait until your home country implements restrictive crypto regulations before seeking a second passport. By then, it’s often too late and you may have to pay unfair penalties in your native country before migrating yourself and your money globally, according to your investment objectives.

2. Inadequate Due Diligence

Not all cryptocurrency- and Bitcoin-friendly countries are created equal. You need to understand the entire investment landscape, not just the crypto regulations. Avoid opening yourself up to substantial risk.

3. Ignoring Traditional Banking

While you and I both believe cryptocurrency is the future, you still need relationships with traditional institutions to validate transactions and prove your financial record. Choose jurisdictions that offer both crypto freedom and solid banking infrastructure.

Some may even allow for digital representation (without physical presence) when opening bank, mutual funds, or crypto accounts.

4. Overlooking Tax Implications

Just because a country accepts cryptocurrency doesn’t mean they won’t tax it. Understand the tax treatment of crypto and Bitcoin, especially as it relates to capital gains.

Summary

Cryptocurrency investing is changing rapidly. While Bitcoin and other digital currencies offer unprecedented opportunities, they also come with significant risks – particularly from governments and traditional financial institutions trying to control a new asset class and prevent market manipulation.

A second passport allows you to secure your freedom to invest in cryptocurrencies, trade, and protect your digital asset holdings. The time to act is now, before more countries implement even more restrictive regulations. A clear framework is welcome. But overbearing, taxing regulations are not.

Remember, the goal is to legally optimize your position as a digital asset/Bitcoin investor and global citizen. The most successful crypto investors I work with are looking for sustainable, legal ways to protect and grow their wealth. A passport portfolio checks many of the boxes.
