What is the D7 Visa?

By recognizing this heightened interest in this type of visa the mid 2000s, the government introduced the D7 Visa in 2007. This Visa is designed to facilitate the legal residence of non-European Union, EEA, or Swiss citizens in Portugal. To be eligible, applicants must have passive income over €760/month (roughly €9,120 annually). The source of income can include pensions, movable property, real estate, transferable assets, intellectual property, or financial investments.

This visa has garnered attention due to its enviable cost and quality of life compared to other European countries. Plus, a scheme to potentially reduce tax obligations for expatriates. A much added bonus is Portugal’s inclusion in the Schengen zone ensures easy access to neighboring countries without the need for additional visas. Who Can Apply for the D7 Visa?

The D7 Visa is open to several categories of individuals, including retirees, pensioners, those with verifiable income sources. Again, applicants must be  non-EU, non-EAA, and non-Swiss citizens. 

People engaged in religious activities are also able to apply for the D7 pathway, provided they meet specific criteria outlined by the Portuguese government.

Required Documents

To successfully apply for the D7 Visa, applicants must gather essential documents, which include:

• proof of accommodation in Portugal,
• proof of sufficient income to cover living expenses for a year, international medical insurance,
• a Portuguese bank account, a Portuguese Fiscal Identification Number (NIF)
• show evidence of at least an income equal to or greater than the minimum wage in Portugal

Can I Bring My Family With Me?

The D7 Visa program permits applicants dependents. Eligible family members include: spouses, siblings under 18, children under 18 or adult children dependent on their parents, and parents dependent on the applicant or their spouse. The income requirements for family reunification depend on the number of family members involved.

Applicants will have to show proof of additional passive income for each dependent they add to their application. For adult dependents, applicants must show proof of an additional 50% passive income beyond the minimum wage (€4,560/annually). To include children, applicants must show an additional 30% passive income per child (€2,736/annually).

How to Apply for the D7 Visa

To begin the application process, applicants should compile all necessary documentation and submit it to the nearest Portuguese embassy or consulate. After submission, applicants will wait for a response. If approved, the applicant can then travel to Portugal.

Other Portugal D7 visa requirements include being over 18 years old and not having a criminal record. 

The Residence Permit Process

Once in Portugal, D7 Visa holders need to apply for a Residence Authorization from the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF). This step requires presenting documents such as applicants passports, proof of accommodation, health insurance, and proof of sufficient income.

The processing time for the visa ranges from 2-4 months, though it can take longer. Upon completing the application process, you will be granted a visa valid for 4 months.

Within this 4 month timeframe applicants are required to travel to Portugal and apply for a permanent residency visa to remain in the country. 

Portugal D7 Minimum Stay

To maintain their residence permit, holders must adhere to specific requirements. For the first two years, they cannot leave the country for more than 6 consecutive months or eight interrupted months. After renewing the residence permit for more than 3 years, holders cannot leave for more than 24 consecutive months or 30 interrupted months.

Maintaining the required income level is crucial for retaining the permit, as it is primarily based on passive income sources. Holders are allowed to work in Portugal, but their primary source of income must remain from their pension or other passive income streams.
